An EKC Canterbury College student has been picked to play for the student GB Ice Hockey Team.
Henny Telford was recently chosen to represent the Great Britain Student Women’s Ice Hockey team.
It comes after a long history on the ice for Henny, which started when she was just a child.
“When I was little, I started figure skating,” she said.
“I did that for quite a few years and then switched to ice hockey three years ago.”
The EKC Canterbury College student, who is studying Electrical Installations, explained that after playing in the junior under-18s team at Gillingham, she then went on to play in the top national league with Streatham Storm – a team in the top British league, based in south London.
This led to Henny getting chosen to play for the Great Britain student ice hockey team.
“I joined a new women’s team this year, and they sent something around about being able to go to a training camp if you’re a student,” Henny explained.
“From there, they selected teams. I was so happy when I found out that I was selected, I remember going to tell my parents straight away when the coach messaged me to give me the news and say congratulations.
“I really think that if you want something hard enough, and you put the work in, you can get there – you just have to keep working and keep trying.”
Looking to the future, the team is waiting to find out if they’ve qualified for an international tournament in China next year.
In the meantime, Henny is determined to keep improving her skills in both Ice Hockey and Electrical Installations.
She said: “The skills I’ve learnt in Ice Hockey really apply to my course. Since I started hockey, I’ve become a lot more confident, and it’s made it easier to talk to people.
“I’m hoping to continue with Electrical Installations, and Ice Hockey on the side.”
