Budding Artists Set to See Artwork Go on Public Display in Canterbury City Centre

Art and Design students from the Canterbury School of Visual Arts (CSVA) at our Canterbury College are set to be the first artists to see their work go on display in Canterbury’s new ‘Sun Yard Outdoor Exhibition Space’.

The innovative outdoor exhibition titled, ‘Apertures’, is due to be unveiled in early August, with vinyl prints of the students’ artwork set to grace shop windows in Canterbury City Centre.

The project is being delivered by Canterbury Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Visit Canterbury.

Head of Visual Arts at the College, Ben Kidger, commented: “We were delighted to have been asked to provide some of our students' artwork to the Canterbury BID to help brighten up Canterbury City Centre.

“This follows a long tradition of CSVA getting our students' work out into the community. This year, it is much needed, as it provides a massive confidence boost to our students who have missed out on the usually highly popular end of year show held in the City Centre.

“The work includes pieces currently on display at www.flat38.co.uk our virtual end of year show, as well as several other highlights from our exceptionally creative team of learners.

“We look forward to more collaborative community based creative projects going into the new academic year.”

Chief Executive of Canterbury BID, Lisa Carlson, commented: “The launch of our new cultural spaces across the City, showcasing Canterbury’s creativity, could not come at a more poignant time as we commemorate our creative heroes within Canterbury and celebrate the creative spirit that remains at the very core of our wonderful city.

“Our virtual Medieval Pageant shows that events can be done differently, yet still enjoyed, and we have plenty more events in the pipeline such as the launch of the Curzon cinema (the first in the UK), a new outdoor Street Food Market, as well as a new outdoor cinema.

“Without a doubt, it has been a challenging time for everyone, and whilst we know this will be a long journey to recovery, it is wonderful to see that Canterbury is ready to welcome all its visitors in a safe, peaceful and beautiful environment.”
