Students from The Edge School of Creative and Business had the opportunity to be inspired last term with a visit from artist and business owner Shane Record.
Shane runs his own art gallery in Folkestone, based in the Creative Quarter, which he has done since 2005.
Our Level 3 Business & Enterprise, Level 3 Art & Design and Junior College students gathered in the hall where they were able to watch a live painting demonstration from Shane, and ask him questions about his creative process and the realties of owning your own business.
They discovered some of the highlights and some of the challenges, and our Business students were particularly interested in discovering how Shane promoted his work and his marketing techniques!
Shane talked about his influences, who inspired him, such as Van Gogh.
The students gave some fantastic feedback about watching Shane work. One student said that “It gave me a good insight into the pros and cons of running an independent and art-based business.”
Another student stated that “I liked seeing how someone’s imagination can turn a blank canvas into a wonderful piece of art without a picture to copy. This taught me that imagination creates a wonderful outcome and that anything is possible.”
And finally, “Shane gave some good points about having your own business – the advantages and disadvantages – that really made my eyes open – I’m inspired!”
Once the painting was complete, the students gathered around to admire the finished piece.
Some of our brave students even decided to show Shane some of their own artwork and the projects they have been working on!
A big thank you to Shane for coming to inspire our students – we hope you will be back soon!
