Student casts spell over theatre audiences

A Canterbury College student has helped transport people out of this world as she helped create the world of Narnia through make-up.

Michelle McKeen, currently studying Level 3 Media and Theatrical Makeup, took on the role of make-up artist at Faversham’s Arden Theatre as they prepared to perform The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Comprising the work experience portion of her course, she excelled at the tough task of creating a completely different world filled with woodland creatures and magical beings.

Michelle said: “It was a truly amazing experience, the theatre there is like a family and I feel like I’m part of that family now.

“It was a big challenge but thanks to everything I’ve learnt, and the amount of practice I’ve put in, it went really well and the theatre company has even invited me back for the next show!”

Her efforts over the course of the 12 performances were also recognised by staff at The Arden Theatre.

Full-time staff member Beverley Cook said: “I consider that she has more than met the criteria for this section of her portfolio-based course. As a worker, she was an exemplary one with a strong work ethic.

“Michelle was an eager and active worker and performed her tasks with diligence flair and great competence.”

On top of a laundry list of tasks highlighted by Beverley, it was noted that “Above all, she was pleasant, polite and integrated well with the cast who found her likeable and fun.”

Michelle said she had a fantastic time and thanked the College for helping to facilitate the opportunity. She’s now looking forward to working to working on the theatre’s production of Cinderella this month.
