Maths GCSE and Functional Skills

An essential qualification if you want to go on to further study and a basic requirement for many jobs.

What does this course involve?

This course is for those aged 19+ who have not already achieved a grade 4 (C grade) at GCSE. The course includes study in the following content areas:

Number – the essential foundation upon which all maths is based. Topics include: basic calculation methods, fractions, decimals and percentages.
Algebra – the language of mathematical communication. The study of algebra includes: notation, vocabulary, algebraic manipulation, sequences and graphs.
Ratio, Proportion and Rates of change – the manipulation of numbers in context and interpreting and understanding the relationship between different numbers.
Geometry and Measure – understanding the properties and construction of different shapes, the correct calculation methods for finding perimeter, area and volume, and the key mathematical concepts of pi and trigonometry.
Probability – understanding and calculating the likelihood of different events and the different methods used to represent probabilities.
Statistics – structuring and interpreting data in tabulated and graphical formats.

Entry requirements

All learners must be aged 19+. You will be required to sit a short aptitude test before starting on the course.

Assessment

Assessment will take place via three 90-minute exam papers: one non-calculator and two where a calculator is permitted. Since September 2016 we have been teaching the new “9 to 1” GCSE in Maths. Numbers will replace letter grades, with 9 being the highest grade and 1 being the lowest.
