Plumbing and Electrical students from Ashford College and the rest of EKC Group went to Canterbury College's campus on Wednesday 25th January, to take part in the KFE4Skills 2023 contest. KFE4Skills is an annual skills competition allowing students across Kent colleges to see who is the best in each department. Wednesday's heats of Plumbing and Electrical would decide who from the group would go on to represent us at the finals in March.
Students had to show off their skills in a variety of challenges designed to impress the judges, who were experts in their respective fields. This experience not only allowed our students to see what skills they had learnt over the past few months, but also to show those in the industry what they are capable of - and to see what they could do in the future.
Jack Bean, who studies our Electrical Installation Diploma Level 2, was tested with how well he followed a plan of work that was required to be done by all the entrants for this trade. The judges paid attention to how well each component was fitted, understanding the design, testing the circuits and health and safety. Jack came 4th in this contest and we are very proud of his hard work on the day.
Representing Ashford College in Plumbing were Adam Macgregor and Ben Sparkes, who study our Advanced Technical Diploma in Plumbing Level 3. For their challenge, they had to do a written problem solving task, followed by a practical exercise involving piping. They had to install copper pipework in an installation suite by using their bending and jointing techniques and skills learnt through college and work experience on our courses. Judges looked at presentation, use of tools, layout and quality of pipework. Ben came 4th in this contest and Adam came 5th. It was really good on the day to see just how their dedication and hard work has paid off.
Jack, Adam and Ben are now able to mention this contest on their CV's and show how their practical work is that of exceptional industry standard. We love giving our students opportunities to boost their experiences in contests like this, and we can't wait to see what they do in the future.
