College - allowing you to express yourself

Applying to College really can change your life in more ways than one. We spoke to Ashford College student Grant after his performance at Canterbury College's Drag Show about how College has helped him gain confidence.

Applying to Ashford College can give you so many opportunities, and can really allow you to express yourself. From student led events to group wide contests, there is no better place to study as well as discover yourself and your potential. One of our students Grant recently took part in Canterbury's yearly Drag Show, performing as Miss Shippy Rose and doing some incredible lip-syncing to "I Will Survive" and "Valerie".

Watch the video below to hear his thoughts about how college has boosted his confidence, or read below for further details.

What made you take part in today's Drag Event?

"I saw it online that it was coming up, and I saw that it was such a big success last year. I thought that this time I’d give it a go and try it myself as like a debut show, and performing live is something I’ve always wanted to try and do. I thought it would be great to have as a first performance to show myself off a little bit more and what I can do."

How did you get into Drag?

"I kind of just got into it really. I used to study makeup in London so I’ve got a qualification in makeup and it carried on from there, as I started to experimented more with different looks, and different makeup skills."

Would you say that coming to College has allowed you to do events like this?

"I’ve been at Ashford College for a few years now, and I feel like its given the confidence to actually do more with my life, and bring out my confidence to actually do this as well. I'd say that at College you can be more yourself, you can enjoy yourself a lot more and build up your confidence as you study. You are also able to freely express yourself with a more relaxed dress code and better wellbeing support than traditionally Sixth Form would have. You can express yourself any way you want."

As well as today, what has been your favourite College event?

"My favourite event at Ashford College has been our Celebration of Culture events as well as the Summer Prom with the student awards, both were really big successes. With this year’s Celebration of Culture we hope that it will be bigger and better than the last one."

Our Celebration of Culture in 2022 included live performances such as steel pan drumming!

It was great to see this performance live, and we are so proud of it here at Ashford College. If you want to see how college could change your life, see what courses we offer, or visit us on our next Open Day!
