Media Student Recognised at New York Film Festival

A Canterbury College student has just been named a semi-finalist at a New York film festival. Carla Binder, who studied Film & Television with the College, produced a project called ‘This is Us’.

Based in Brooklyn, New York, ‘A Rebel Minded Festival’ is a summer film festival which represents independent innovators and creators who express themselves. The film screening will feature filmmakers, who will be screening original documentaries, short films, trailers and music videos.

‘This is Us’ is a short experimental film focussing on the impact and issues we have in today’s society through spoken word.

Carla had worked on the film for her Level 2 extended project whilst at Canterbury College. She said: “Studying Film & Television was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It helped me be where I am today.”

Carla has previously had her projects shown in Brazil and Australia film festivals, too. She enjoys creating films with a focus on raising awareness of political and social issues.

She said: “I’m very lucky and honoured that my films have been shown in many different countries. It’s incredible that all this has happened and I’m only 18!”

Carla has just finished her three-year course at Canterbury College and is now looking forward to a successful career, having been invited for various interviews, including one with the Facebook marketing team.

She said: “I’m still very much working on short films. At the moment, I am putting together a team for my next film, which will hopefully be shown at film festivals, too. I’m really looking forward to what will happen next.”
