Engineering students visited DS Smith Kemsley Papermill in Sittingbourne for a guided tour of the site. Students had the opportunity to speak with industry professionals and gain some advice and motivation about working in the engineering sector.
DS Smith is a leading provider of corrugated packaging and a specialist in plastic packaging worldwide. Having the opportunity to see first-hand the work involved in such a company has really motivated students to pursue their careers in the industry.
Students were given a tour of the facilities, including all of the production lines and labs, followed by presentations in the electrical and instrumentation workshop. Students were able to ask questions about the work and gain knowledge direct from the company’s engineers.
Alan Carver, Business Improvement Manager at Kemsley Mill, said: “It was a pleasure to be able to take around the two groups of students and tutors Alex Guntripp and Jon Smith. We were impressed with all that came – they were genuinely interested in the details and scale of Kemsley Mill operations and they were all a credit to Canterbury College.”
Over the past 80 years the organisation has grown dramatically, and there have been discussions with DS Smith about the possibility of Apprenticeship placements for Canterbury College going forward. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Kemsley Mill in 2019!
