Your Festive Guide to Canterbury

If you're lacking a little Christmas spirit, why not take a look at our festive checklist of things to do in Canterbury around this time of year.

Christmas market

Wrap up warm and wander around Canterbury’s biggest Christmas market yet! You can browse lots of different cabins selling gifts and festive food. Take a look at the handmade items to get some gift inspiration, or warm up with a coffee, mince pie or even a gourmet doughnut. The market is on until Christmas Eve, so there’s plenty of time to have a look around and enjoy the festivities.

Whitefriars Shopping Centre

Have you left your Christmas shopping a little late this year? If so, then luckily, the College is only a five-minute walk away from Whitefriars Shopping Centre, where you can grab lots of last-minute bargains for anybody that you’ve still got to buy for! Lots of shops have special deals on their gifts, and don’t forget that there are loads of opportunities to use your student discount, saving you money on your Christmas shopping, too.

Don’t forget that on Thursdays most shops stay open a little later, so you can use this time to get completely organised and take the stress out of Christmas, leaving you lots of time to enjoy all of the fun stuff!

Demelza Christmas Carols at Canterbury Cathedral

For an evening of joyful celebration, we recommend attending the Demelza Christmas Carol Service on 17th December for an uplifting and memorable experience. Take in the warm glow of Canterbury Cathedral’s vast ceilings and ornate architecture as you listen to the beautiful carols sung by the Christmas choir from your seat in the Nave. Bringing the community together and donating to the Demelza Hospice Charity truly represents the spirit of Christmas. Click here to get your tickets!

Shop Locally

There are so many independent shops and cafes in Canterbury to visit this Christmas if you’re looking for the perfect gift, or to take a well-deserved break in between your Christmas shopping. Pop to the Cheese Shop on the Kings Mile to stock up on Stilton, Brie and Wensleydale for the big day, or warm up with a festive flavoured coffee in Burgate Coffee House.

Take in the Christmas Lights

Why not take a stroll through the city centre and take in all of the beautiful Christmas lights that are on display? Wrap up warm in a woolly had and gloves and take a wander down Whitefriars, Burgate and the Kings Mile to see the twinkling fairy lights and festive Christmas displays. Guaranteed to make you feel festive without spending a penny!
