This course will run every Tuesday 5pm -7pm from September to June, when you will sit your exams.

Assessment Date: Tuesday 21st September 2021 at 5pm 

Course Start Date: Tuesday 28th September 2021

An essential qualification if you want to go on to further study, and a basic requirement for many jobs, this course will enable you to develop your abilities in reading, understanding and analysing text as well as exploring creative writing.

How will I be assessed?

You will complete 2 final exams, both unseen texts. There will also be a speaking and listening assessment, throughout the course of study.

What may it lead to?

GCSE English is designed to enable students of all abilities to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st century time periods as well as to write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures. There is also a compulsory speaking and listening component in which advice will be given on delivering presentations to an audience. You will receive a separate award, gaining a pass, merit or distinction.

The course is broken down into 2 units, both assessed using a final, unseen examination:

  • Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing (50%)
  • Section A: Reading - one literature fiction text (25%)
  • Section B: Writing - descriptive or narrative writing (25%)
  • Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives (50%)
  • Section A: Reading - one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text (25%)
  • Section B: Writing - writing to present a viewpoint (25%)

Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language (0% weighting of GCSE):

  • presenting
  • responding to questions and feedback
  • use of Standard English

Entry Requirements

Students need to be aged 18+. 

You will be required to sit an assessment before joining this course, to ensure you are working at a suitable level to meet the course requirements. If you are successful during your assessment, you will be able to begin the course the week after.

Please note: You will not be able to begin the course without completing an assessment. If you are unable to attend the assessment, please contact us and we will be able to rearrange this for you.

Additional Information & Other Costs

There is no fee for GCSE English provided you do not already hold the qualification at grade C or above.
