Pathways are made up of courses focused on future careers or further education opportunities
In a fast-paced environment where every day will be different and challenging, and with job opportunities all over the world, the hospitality industry offers great career choices and great rewards.
In addition to great work experience in our own on-site hotel, The Yarrow, our Hospitality students will also work alongside our partners at the Exclusive Butler School. This unique partnership will give our students the edge in the service industry and can help launch an exciting career as a butler or yacht steward.
The Yarrow hotel opened to the public in 2016 and sits within the Broadstairs College campus grounds. Converted from a Grade 2 listed building, the hotel has 23 bedrooms, 5 suites, a salon and a restaurant, with event space for 120 people. This unique learning environment provides valuable work experience for our Hospitality students, giving them a real insight into the industry and how it works.
One Broadstairs College student per academic year will be selected to receive a scholarship placement on the Exclusive Butler School two-week course, worth £7,000. Should the scholarship winner decide to pursue a career as a Yacht Steward, they can opt to undertake the STCW course instead. Students will be observed during the Royal Butler Dinners throughout the year, and three students will be selected to interview for this prestigious placement.
Careers in this industry include:
Learn the art of mixology. This practical training session is designed to give our hospitality students the skills and knowledge to create delicious mocktails and cocktails as well as refining their bartending skills.
Learn what it takes to pour perfection. This module will provide a complete understanding of coffee and give students a barista’s knowledge of exact timings and weights.
Having a full understanding of the intricacies of wine is a vital skill for any hospitality student. This interactive module combines practical and theory elements designed to give an introduction to the world of wine - how wine is made, stored, grape varieties, and the preparation and serving of wine.
Students will gain in-depth experience of all elements of Table Service, taking students back to basics and evolving their skills through a series of different service styles and techniques including Butler, Plated, Silver, Buffet, Arabic and Russian.
Gain an in-depth understanding of table attire - the different types of table linen, tablecloths, napkins and centrepieces. Moving on to table laying, students will be shown the difference between each item of cutlery and glassware and how to set out a perfect table for any occasion.
You will have the opportunity to work alongside the Exclusive Butler School trainers at their prestigious Royal Butler Dinner. This event is held three times per year and gives the general public the experience of being a guest at venues such as a Royal Palace or Embassy.
You will receive practical training on how to clean and care for a variety of different shoes, including a spit and polish masterclass.
This hands-on session will teach you essential valeting skills including how to valet shirts, suits and other specialist items to Butler standard. You will also cover effective wardrobe management, as well as packing and unpacking for your future employers.
