The travel industry is one of the biggest industries in the world. Despite current circumstances, the travel industry will recover and then continue to grow and prosper. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), over 100 million jobs could return to the global travel and tourism sector in the next few years.
Our facilities here at Dover Technical College allow you to gain practical skills, as well as theoretical knowledge. We have excellent facilities including the interior of an airliner, for those of you who may be interested in pursuing cabin crew as a career path. You will benefit from the strong links made with our industry partners, some of which involve gaining sea survival experience, fire safety and first aid qualifications, putting you in an excellent position to further your career in this sector.
To help gain a better understanding of the industry, you will have the opportunity to participate in an educational trip, broadening your horizons with new experiences. Q: How long does the Travel and Tourism course take?
A: The level 2 course is one year. The level 3 course can be one or two years, depending on whether you wish to study the Diploma or Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism.
Q: How will I be assessed?
A: There is one exam at level 2 and level 3 (year 1). This is for the worldwide travel and tourism destinations unit. This is an online multiple-choice exam and you get to take your atlas in with you! The remainder of the course is assessed in a variety of ways including roleplays, presentations, essays, reports, leaflets, articles and mini tests.
Q: What will I be studying?
A: You will study a variety of different tourism related units including (but not limited to): marketing, visitor attractions, the cruise industry, customer service, resort representatives, worldwide adventure tourism, tour operations, event planning etc.
Q: Where is the college based?
A: We are based in the great coastal location of Dover, with the busiest cross channel ferry port in the UK, a modern and expanding growing cruise port and of course, Dover Castle. There are big plans in place to develop the port and town of Dover so the there will be lots of employment opportunities available for our students in the very near future.
Q: Will you have guest speakers?
A: Yes, we have regular guest speakers to learn more about this exciting and fun industry. Past guest speakers include a Captain from Virgin Atlantic, cabin crew from both Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic, Travel Counsellors, National Trust and Eurotunnel.
Q: Will there be work experience?
A: Yes. You need to complete a minimum of 30 hours work experience during the course. In the past students have taken part in work experience with DFDS Ferries, Best Western Dover Marina Hotel, Best Western Clifton Hotel Folkestone, TUI Travel Agents, Viking Recruitment to name a few.
Q: What other qualifications can I study alongside the course?
A: At level 3, you have the option to study the Level 2 Award in Air Cabin Crew. Also, level 2 students will take part in training at the Maritime Skills Academy where they will gain industry recognised certificates in Personal Survival Techniques and Elementary First Aid.
We are also linked with the Travel Training Academy where students are able to achieve additional online qualifications on a variety of topics including cabin crew and holiday reps.
Q: What facilities does the Travel and Tourism department have?
A: We are extremely lucky to have our own air cabin crew room which is mockup of an airplane and airport departure lounge!
Q: Will there be trips and days out?
A: YES! The best way to learn about travel and tourism is to go out and about. We are hoping that in 21/22 we can get out and about as much as possible! Recent trips include Dover Castle, Port Lympne, Saga Holidays, P&O call centre and an overnight trip to London where our students were able to practice flying a plane using commercial flight simulators at the Emirates Aviation Experience.
This year students have the exciting opportunity of 2-3 weeks work experience in Spain, where you have the option of staying in either Seville or Granada.
Q: Can the college help with costs?

Q: How many days do I need to be in College?
A: You will usually be in College for approximately two and a half days per week for your travel course.
Q: Can I work while studying on the Travel and Tourism course?
A: Of course. The majority of our students opt for part-time employment.
Q: What is the future for the travel and tourism industry?
A: The last year and a half has been difficult for the travel industry but it has been difficult for everyone! However, the travel industry is robust. This is not the first time that the travel industry has suffered and had to adapt, think back to 9/11. However, the industry is resilient, and the world is desperate to travel and go on holiday again. The travel industry WILL recover, and it will be better than ever!! When this happens there will be a massive recruitment drive for staff and they will be looking for people with the appropriate qualifications and training.

Sacha joined Dover Technical College/East Kent Group in October 2017 following teaching Travel & Tourism since 2006 in schools and colleges. Prior to this, Sacha has travelled all over Europe as a holiday rep, travel consultant and customer relations executive. As Programme Director, Sacha is responsible for offering a varied and interesting curriculum that engages the students and meets the needs of local employers.

Tanya Conyers-Silverthorn is an experienced Lecturer in Travel and Tourism.
Tanya joined Dover Technical College in January 2019. After graduating, Tanya built up a career in Event Management. She has travelled all over the world both for business and pleasure. She’s organised global conferences with key political figures in attendance, as well as working on the corporate hospitality programme for BP at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games
Annike King is the Head of Service Industries and Access.
Annike joined Dover Technical College in 2015. After a career in librarianship, Annike retrained as a teacher in 2015 and is now leading the vibrant Service Industry Department. She is passionate about providing opportunities for personal and professional development for local people and loves collaborating with employers to give students the best possible experience at College and beyond.
