Meet Sam - Your New SU Vice-President

Former Communications Officer, Sam Clark has just been elected as your new Vice-President of the Students' Union (SU). We caught up with him to find out how he plans to make College a better place for all students.

What do you study at Canterbury College?

I have been working my way through the levels of a Performing Arts course – I’ve just completed Level 1 and my intention is to slowly make my way through all three levels.

What influenced your decision to study Performing Arts?

It’s a funny story – I wasn’t really set on a course that I wanted to study but I knew that I wanted to come to Canterbury College as I had heard that it was very accepting towards home-schooling students. As I had been previously home-schooled, this sounded ideal. So I ended up on the Performing Arts course – probably due to my love of comedy!

How has your course helped you make the most of your roles within the Students’ Union?

My course has not only educated me in Drama but has also given me the skills required to get a job. A lot of these skills are things like multitasking, organisation and working under pressure. I find that there is something about being a performer and a people-person that goes hand-in-hand. I find myself naturally leading in my scenarios in the SU and feel very capable to hand anything – all things that I credit to my course.

I will always ask for support from the team when I need it. As a previous Communications Officer, I know that I can be fully committed to both my course and being a Vice-President.

What do you feel most passionate about changing?

I am very ambitious and I know that I want to ensure that College is a great place for everyone. I want every student to see College as a place that they want to be.

How do you plan to support Andrew as the President?

My aim is to follow in Andrew’s footsteps as he was the Vice-President last year. I know that he will always be able to lend me a hand. I have worked closely with Andrew for the past year which has provided us with a bond and a connection that make us work well as a team. I feel like we can easily support each other as we know what motivates us.

What advice do you have for students looking to get involved in the SU?

If you want to help people and make a difference, being a part of the SU is the path for you! Take it slow and never hesitate to ask for support. At the end of the day, we’re all a team and we all look out for each other. When you first join it can feel a little daunting, but the support is fantastic.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans never go further than one step at a time – I know that I want to do a good job as a Vice-President and I will look to do a very similar role next year to give back to the College – I just want everyone to enjoy College – that’s my plan!
