Meet the Sixth Form Team

Emma is the Director of EKC Sixth Form College and will be working closely with the team to deliver engaging and inspiring curriculums for students, enabling them to achieve the best they can and progress to exciting destinations.

Education

Teaching Career

Emma began teaching in 2003 and has been a senior leader in 14-19 and post-16 settings for the past ten years. She has taught across a wide range of curriculums and subjects, including History and Politics on A Level, GCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Emma is a History examiner for the IB and has previously examined A Level History and Government and Politics. She has extensive experience teaching EPQ and coaches and mentors teachers and leaders.  

Trivia

Emma loves to travel and recently spent 10 months with her family travelling around Australia and New Zealand. She loves sport, particularly football and cricket. She is a keen skier and has recently taken up learning tennis.

Jaws is her favourite film.

Shelley is a Head of EKC Sixth Form College and the pathway manager for Humanities and Environment, Geography and Sustainability and is looking forward to opening up students’ eyes (and brains!) to the different theories and how we can apply this to our society, often resulting in differing opinions in the classroom.

Teaching Career

Shelley has been teaching since 2009 and has worked across London and Kent, teaching a range of Humanities subjects, specialising in History and Sociology. She has previously led History and Humanities departments and has been a deputy head of sixth form.

Shelley continues to work for the Kent Teaching School Hub as a visiting fellow, supporting tutors in working through the Early Career Framework. She is a qualified A Level Sociology examiner.

Trivia

Shelley trains in Karate and Ladies Combat Defence. She has a deep desire to learn new skills, with the belief that anything is possible! She has signed up to do the London Marathon and has completed several 20+ mile runs. Shelley is always pushing herself to reach new goals, which makes her family laugh, but shows what we are capable of when we put our minds to it!

 

Irma-Jane is the Creative Pathway Manager who teaches Photography and Fine Art A Levels. She has worked with 16+ and adults for over 20 years and has experience supporting a range of additional support needs and raising aspirations, which with her guidance enables students to be their best.

Hobbies

Irma-Jane walks her dog at St Augustine’s Abbey with the saints and the dog walking community.  She enjoys car boot sales and purchasing the obscure.  Her favourite thing to watch on TV is anything with subtitles as it keeps her off her phone!

 

Sandra is the STEM Pathway Manager at EKC Sixth Form College and is looking forward to guiding and supporting students towards future study and exciting, cutting-edge careers in such an essential and expanding area.

Teaching Career

Sandra specialises in teaching Biology and has taught GCSE, Access to Higher Education, A Levels, Level 3 BTEC, HNC and HND. She has also assessed apprentices in a variety of laboratory-based workplaces across East Kent.

Trivia

Sandra is a woodturner and loves listening to rock music – sometimes at the same time!

Samuel is the pathway manager for Law, Politics and Social Sciences and will be supporting teachers to deliver an exciting and comprehensive curriculum. He will be running a Debate Club, whereby students can practice and train for competitions and develop skills that allow them to engage in feisty discussions on the important topic of today’s society.

Teaching Career

Samuel has taught in sixth form colleges, academies, and FE Colleges throughout his teaching career. He has taught A Level Sociology and managed a combination of vocational programmes alongside A Level Sociology and Psychology.

He holds assessor qualifications and has been an internal verifier since 2021.

Hobbies

Samuel is a keen traveller and is looking forward to his next holidays where he will be exploring New York and Morocco. He loves a variety of music, animals, gigs, and comedy. He claims to have a good, sarcastic sense of humour!

 

Rhianon is an English Literature teacher at EKC Sixth Form College. She is excited to share her passion for books and words with young people that enjoy them too. She is an experienced journalist and is hoping to run a journalism ‘portfolio’ course for students who are interested.

Teaching Career

After graduating, Rhianon spent four years as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher, working in the Czech Republic, Italy, and Japan. She then completed a postgraduate diploma in Magazine Journalism and worked as a journalist for 17 years, before deciding to return to teaching.

Since January 2019, Rhianon has been teaching GCSE English Language, Functional Skills and ESOL to 16-18-year-old learners and adults.

Trivia

Rhiannon lives in Broadstairs with her family and a giant black cat called Wilfred. She is English by birth, but Welsh by heritage, which she gets around by supporting England in football and Wales in rugby.

She loves the sea, the theatre and Japanese food.

Angie is an A Level teacher in both Art & Design and Photography.

Teaching Career

Throughout her teaching career, Angie has been teaching Level 3 (A Level Art & Design, Fine Art, and Photography.) She formerly worked for six years in a London FE College where she led the A Level courses, responsible for writing all course material, organising coursework, examinations, exhibitions, and moderation.

More recently, Angie has worked at Broadstairs College, teaching Art and Photography.

Trivia

Angie sings in a choir and enjoys swimming. She has a very chatty Siamese Cat.

Christine is an English Literature A Level teacher who is passionate about engaging students by making literature relevant to their lives. She believes literature fosters critical thinking and encourages students to question and explain their thinking.

Christine has eight years of teaching experience in further and post-compulsory education, specialising in delivering English Literature A Level, as well as Access to Higher Education programmes.

Trivia

A lifelong learner and always open to new ideas, Christine loves reading, attending conferences, and conducting research to stay current with the latest developments in the field of modern poetry.

She is a dedicated member of Canterbury Historical and Archaeological Society and enjoys staying up to date with research and collaborations relating to Canterbury and its cultural significance.

Rosie is an A Level History teacher and has a wealth of experience in additional support. She is passionate about combining her interest in history and making inclusive teaching a fundamental part of her practice. She is excited to support all of the students at EKC Sixth Form College in reaching their goals – whatever they may be.

Teaching Career

Rosie started her career as a teaching assistant at a secondary school then moved on to be a Lead Learning Support Practitioner for Supported Learning students and Additional Learning Support, supporting students across the mainstream vocational courses at Canterbury College.

Trivia

Rosie loves food and cooking – she has a whole shelf dedicated to nutrition and cookbooks at home!

Melanie teaches both Art and Textiles A Level at EKC Sixth Form College. She is highly creative and is looking forward to using her wide range of skills including textiles, art, prop making, costume design and construction.

Teaching Experience

Melanie has been teaching at Canterbury College for 8 years and more recently has been delivering Theatre Production and Digital Media. In October 2020, she began working on a BA in Creative Arts with OCA.

Trivia

When she is not being creative, Melanie enjoys quad skating, ballroom dancing and attending live music events.

Nancy is a Criminology teacher at EKC Sixth Form College. She believes Criminology is a fascinating subject that is constantly changing and evolving and is sure that students will be as excited about it as she is.

Teaching Experience

Nancy has taught a wide variety of students throughout her career. More recently, she has taught in state secondary schools from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5. She has experience in teaching adults and training teachers.

Trivia

Nancy is always learning and loves to travel. Her Criminology dissertation was on the spectacle of crime, which she wrote part of when travelling and teaching in Costa Rica!

Debbie is a Psychology and Politics A Level teacher at EKC Sixth Form College and is looking forward to teaching a fascinating subject with many different areas of interest. She is looking forward to empowering students to apply their knowledge and support them in their other academic studies

Teaching Career

Debbie has taught at a range of educational establishments, including secondary and grammar schools, international schools and secure training centres.

She has specialised in teaching A Levels, in particular Psychology, Sociology and Politics.

Debbie is an A Level examiner which aids her teaching and positively supports her students’ learning.

Trivia

Debbie loves baking – her signature cake is lemon drizzle. She is a self-confessed ‘crazy cat lady’ as she looks after four cats as well as her family.

Joseph is a History and Classics A Level teacher. He is looking forward to the potential for working with classics, history, or creative writing EPQs and running creative writing electives.

Joseph has combined his love for writing with table top gaming for his PhD topic of ‘TRPG as Literature’.

 

Mark is an A-Level Business teacher who loves how Business affects our everyday lives and how we interact and are influenced in our buying decisions by lots of different organisations whether people realise it or not!

Education

BA(Hons) Marketing Design, Solent University, Southampton

Postgraduate Diploma in Post-Compulsory Education, Canterbury Christchurch University

Business, History and French A Level.

Teaching Experience

After graduating, Mark worked in Marketing in financial services. After completing his PGCE he has taught predominately in FE at what was South Kent College and in some secondary schools teaching A-Level, BTEC Level 3, GCSE and BTEC Level 2 in Business Studies and has taught the LIBF Certificate in Financial Studies.  

Mark has also taught numeracy and literacy in prison education and was employed by the DWP for the youth team, helping claimants find work and apply for jobs.

Trivia

Mark has run local summer youth camps and youth groups, enjoys cycling, cinema, food and travelling. He hopes to return to Finland to go Huskie sledding again.

Ellen teaches A Level Music and piano at Canterbury College. She also gives guidance on UCAS applications and is looking forward to teaching EPQ.

Teaching Career

Ellen has taught in 3 comprehensive secondary + 6th form schools and 1 grammar school. She has taught GCSE, BTEC L2/3, EPQ, A Level, piano and cello tuition.

 

Holly and Rosie are your student experience officers and work across the whole Canterbury College campus and will be responsible for making sure that your College experience is great. 

Holly is an Astronomy, Space Science and Astrophysics graduate from the University of Kent with a passion for event planning and student voice. Rosemarie is an Illustration graduate who is passionate about introducing students to the world of Art. 

Whether it's trips, activities or the Students' Union, Holly and Rosemarie will be there to give you a fantastic extra-curricular experience.
