An intensive one-year course for students wanting to improve their academic skills, including English and maths, to progress to a Level 3 Study Programme.
One day per week will focus on GCSE Maths and English so that all students have the opportunity and support to achieve these essential qualifications, which are a requirement in the world of work and necessary for further academic study. Our specialist tutors deliver an interesting and inclusive curriculum that prepares students for the GCSE exams at the end of the year.
In addition, this programme offers students the opportunity to develop their own interests in preparation for work or study. Learners acquire a set of essential skills, such as critical thinking skills, study skills, academic writing and IT skills, with the opportunity to personalise their studies to accommodate and develop specific interests.
Furthermore, all students receive an induction to the subjects taught on the Access courses at the College, which include English Literature, History, Law, Politics, Biology, Psychology and Sociology. Learners will also attend a variety of events, including UCAS events and employability workshops.
Successful applicants must be prepared to undertake independent study outside of College contact time. This will require reading, research and essay writing.
In addition to GCSEs in maths and English, students gain a Level 2 Progression Diploma from LASER, which is a Full Level 2 qualification (GCSE equivalent).
This course is designed for learners aged 16+ who have a Level 1 or vocational Level 2 and some GCSEs at grade D.
Assessment methods will include essays, case studies, projects and presentations, and students will collect evidence of their work in a portfolio. Although there are some timed essays and in-class assessments, there are no public exams for the Pre-Access qualification. Students will sit the standard GCSE exams for maths and English.
