Welcome to The Technical School. We offer pupils a high-quality Study Programme which incorporates an academic curriculum alongside additional technical pathways.
The Technical School at Broadstairs College first opened its doors in September 2015, offering pupils a high-quality Study Programme which incorporates an academic curriculum alongside additional technical pathways. The school is able to offer students places to start full-time courses in Year 10 in September this year. This means that students in Year 9 can opt to leave their current school and join The Technical School from the start of Year 10.
Since 2013, the Government has allowed learners aged 14 plus to leave school and enrol on full-time courses at local further education colleges, as they realise that some students are far better suited to a more practical way of learning. Only colleges that have been rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted, like Broadstairs College, can offer Year 10 students this exciting opportunity. I know from talking to parents that for some young people, studying academic subjects in a secondary school environment is not ideal and they would welcome more choice locally.
The two-year Study Programme gives pupils the chance to study a technical pathway within the college alongside their core GCSE’s in English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science, Core P.E and RE.
We identify that some students have a clear idea of the industry they want to progress into, and the study programme at The Technical School, offers them the opportunity to study a Level 1 and Level 2 qualification across years 10 and 11 for 2 and a half days a week. This would mean them infilling into post 16 lessons, which our results demonstrate raises aspirations, increases progress and encourages maturity through learning alongside mature learners. Programme Areas which students may be able to study include:
On successful completion, students can then progress further on these vocational pathways at Broadstairs College and onto higher education, an apprenticeship or work. What is more because of their emphasis on core subjects our Study Programmes also enable students to change direction at 16+ if they do decide to follow other paths to success in adult life.
I strongly encourage you to come along to one of our Open Days to find out more and I look forward to meeting you. For more information regarding the application process as well as an application form, please email Technical.School@eastkent.ac.uk. Closing date for applications is 29th April 2019.
I decided to send my child to The Technical School as he wasn’t motivated at his last school. The Technical School is different because it pushes students to the best of their ability and brings out the best in them. The facilities are fantastic and the tutors are encouraging and positive, which has increased my son’s self-confidence. I would recommend it to other parents as it’s everything you want for your child in the most important years of their education.
Without doubt it was the right decision to send my daughter to The Technical School. She loves it there and the tutors are excellent. They are very approachable and have a closer relationship with the students. It’s a small school, which makes it feel like a community and it’s very friendly. I would highly recommend The Technical School to other parents as my daughter is really doing well.
To any parents considering the School, I would say give it a try – it’s a nice environment and I especially liked the idea of a smaller school setting. The tutors know my daughter very well due to the small class sizes, and the Head Teacher is easy to speak to without an appointment. My daughter really likes coming here.
I chose to send my child to The Technical School because I liked the idea of pathways leading to vocational courses. It’s a nice, modern, clean school and I have been hugely impressed with the staff at the School – the tutors are very accessible and helpful. I definitely made the right decision sending my child to The Technical School; my son is blossoming and comes home happy every day.
