The Technical School

Welcome to The Technical School. We offer pupils a high-quality Study Programme which incorporates an academic curriculum alongside additional technical pathways.

Introducing a new way of learning for 14-16 year olds

The Technical School at Broadstairs College first opened its doors in September 2015, offering pupils a high-quality Study Programme which incorporates an academic curriculum alongside additional technical pathways. The school is able to offer students places to start full-time courses in Year 10 in September this year. This means that students in Year 9 can opt to leave their current school and join The Technical School from the start of Year 10.

Technical qualifications

Since 2013, the Government has allowed learners aged 14 plus to leave school and enrol on full-time courses at local further education colleges, as they realise that some students are far better suited to a more practical way of learning. Only colleges that have been rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted, like Broadstairs College, can offer Year 10 students this exciting opportunity. I know from talking to parents that for some young people, studying academic subjects in a secondary school environment is not ideal and they would welcome more choice locally.

The Study Programme

The two-year Study Programme gives pupils the chance to study a technical pathway within the college alongside their core GCSE’s in English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science, Core P.E and RE.

We identify that some students have a clear idea of the industry they want to progress into, and the study programme at The Technical School, offers them the opportunity to study a Level 1 and Level 2 qualification across years 10 and 11 for 2 and a half days a week. This would mean them infilling into post 16 lessons, which our results demonstrate raises aspirations, increases progress and encourages maturity through learning alongside mature learners. Programme Areas which students may be able to study include:

  • Business
  • Catering
  • Media and Photography
  • Art
  • Music
  • Hair and Beauty
  • Built Environment
  • Motor Vehicle
  • Engineering
  • Computing
  • Early Years and Health and Social Care

On successful completion, students can then progress further on these vocational pathways at Broadstairs College and onto higher education, an apprenticeship or work. What is more because of their emphasis on core subjects our Study Programmes also enable students to change direction at 16+ if they do decide to follow other paths to success in adult life.

I strongly encourage you to come along to one of our Open Days to find out more and I look forward to meeting you. For more information regarding the application process as well as an application form, please email Technical.School@eastkent.ac.uk. Closing date for applications is 29th April 2019.
