Catering students experience Taste of Kent

Canterbury College Catering students got to experience the best of what Kent has to offer in terms of food and drink, at the recent annual Taste of Kent awards. Taking place on the 15th June, this year's contest represented over 300 growers, producers, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, pubs, restaurants and other food-serving hospitality outlets. 

Before the winners were announced, students were invited to look around the many vendors up for an award, who were located at the Gulbenkian on the University of Kent's Canterbury campus. In attendance were companies including The Captains' Crackers, Pig and Porter and Garage Coffee, some of whom supply our Streetside Cafe with local produce. 

Lucy Sutcliffe, Restaurant Supervisor for Streetside was in attendance with the students. Lucy and her Streetside team are passionate about supporting local businesses and getting the best products that Kent has to offer, so this event was a great chance to also see what students may want offered on campus.

Meeting vendors and business owners at the Taste of Kent Awards also highlighted for our students that after College, work placement or further study they don’t have to work for big companies, as small ones can be just as successful! Most stall-holders in attendance at the Taste of Kent Awards have started up their own businesses from scratch and become big successes! 

As the awards were announced, it turned out to be a great night for our Streetside team as one of the coffees they sell on campus won a Gold Award. Garage Coffee won a Gold Award in their Kent Non-Alcoholic Hot Drink of the Year Category for their Maypole coffee blend, which has notes of milk chocolate, hazelnut and orange. EKC Group also sponsored an award - Kent Prepared or Cured Meat Product of the Year - which was won by Macknade for their Mr Peppers Sausages.
