English as a Second Language

This is a range of Study Programmes focussing on English skills at Entry Level and Level 1.

What will I learn?

All courses are full-time and include up to six hours per week of English tuition alongside maths, ICT and citizenship.

Units covered:

  • English - tuition includes reading, writing, speaking and listening. The programme is designed to enable students to take individual components at the level they can achieve.
  • Maths – up to 4 hours maths tuition is included in the programme.
  • IT Skills - students will work on their computer skills including keyboard and mouse control, touch typing, file management, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation skills, using the internet and implementing e-mail usage.
  • Citizenship – the course discusses aspects of life in the UK such as society, politics, media, community, law, work, charity, money and finance.
  • Sports and Healthy Living -keeping fit and exploring healthy living choices.
  • Art – enabling students to explore their creativity.
  • Employability skills – career planning and goal setting, rights and responsibilities at work, effective skills, qualities and attitudes for learning and work, interview skills.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed though coursework and exams.

What may it lead to?

By the end of the course you will have developed your personal skills as well as English, maths and IT. Successful completion of the course will allow you to progress on to the next level. For those students who reach the level required, the next step is progression onto a vocational programme.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications.

Assessments are held prior to the start of the programme and students enrol on to the level according to their ability.

At your interview, the tutor will discuss the entry requirements for each level and course. This is also your opportunity to make sure that this pathway meets your goals and ambitions.
