EKC Group’s family of colleges are committed to carrying out community projects that initiate positive change in the local area. During the pandemic we have had to rethink how we can make a meaningful impact whilst still maintaining social distancing guidelines and keeping all students and staff safe. One such project which has gathered attention is a scheme aiming to combat the isolation felt by some of the most vulnerable in our community.
Funded by Techno Timber Construction and Thanet District Council Active Thanet, Broadstairs College Sport and Leisure students have been busy making up Sport Stack packs to be distributed across the district to elderly groups in care homes and organisations that support those suffering from isolation. The recipients of the packs will be able to enjoy a fun speed stacking activity over the festive period while improving their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
Programme Director for Sport and Leisure at Broadstairs College, Sam Perkins, said; “My students are always passionate about going above and beyond to support the local community. We have worked with Thanet District Council in the past on projects to support those suffering from isolation. However, isolation has been felt on a much larger scale this year due to the impact of measures put in place to stem the rate of coronavirus transmission. Therefore, it was important for us to once again work together and devise a way we can help in these challenging times. I am so proud of my students who not only wanted to support those affected but extend their remit to care homes and social clubs. A massive thank you must go to Techno Timber Construction who have purchased all the Sport Stack Cups."
Sport stacking, (also known as cup stacking or speed stacking), is an individual and team activity that involves stacking 9 or 12 specially designed cups in pre-determined sequences as fast as possible. Packs compiled by the students will include the equipment needed for the activity, instructions on how to play, a USB with a pre-loaded video tutorial, as well as entry details to a competition.
