Introducing a new way of learning for 14-16 year olds

Broadstairs Junior College first opened its doors in September 2015, offering pupils a high-quality Study Programme that focuses on vocational courses, with the goal of leading to career paths. The College is able to offer students places to start full-time courses in Year 10 in September this year. This means that students in Year 9 can opt to leave their current school and join our Junior College from the start of Year 10.

Vocational qualifications

Since 2013, the Government has allowed learners aged 14 plus to leave school and enrol on full-time courses at local further education colleges, as they realise that some students are far better suited to a more practical way of learning. Only colleges that have been rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted, like Broadstairs College, can offer Year 10 students this exciting opportunity. I know from talking to parents that for some young people, studying academic subjects in a secondary school environment is not ideal and they would welcome more choice locally.

The Study Programme

We identify that some students have a clear idea of the industry they want to progress into, and the study programme at our Junior College, offers them the opportunity to study a vocational qualification for 50% of their time at College. This would mean them in filling into post 16 lessons, which our results demonstrate raises aspirations, increases progress and encourages maturity through learning alongside our post-16 learners. Curriculum areas which students may be able to study in may include:

  • Catering
  • Media and Photography
  • Art
  • Music
  • Hair and Beauty
  • Built Environment
  • Motor Vehicle
  • Computing
  • Early Years and Health and Social Care

On successful completion, students can then progress further on these vocational pathways at Broadstairs College and onto higher education, an apprenticeship or work. What is more, because of their emphasis on core subjects our courses also enable students to change direction at 16+ if they do decide to follow other paths to success in adult life.
