This year, we went all out with our Freshers Fayre, to celebrate the first large-scale event in a while!
We welcomed a range of businesses from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Kent and Canterbury Christchurch Universities, Charlton Athletic football club, and much more! Students were able to access vouchers, freebies, and experts from a range of organisations too. A-Class driving school, The BeYou Project, Papa Johns, and Victoria Park were just a few of the visitors we hosted.
We were also thrilled to show our students examples of the enrichment activities that will soon be available to them, including learning to DJ and Capoeira. Music performance and production students were providing the entertainment for the event, by playing their own sets that they had mixed.
Capoeira coach, Madeira Muzenza, was on hand to give us a demonstration of the performance art, and tell the students more about it, he discussed the history, importance and aim of the art. He is pictured below with student, John.
Students were also lucky enough to speak to and learn from Kent Fire and Rescue Service who brought their simulation of how serious a pan fire can be.
They gave an example of what not to do if you ever encounter an oil fire. By adding only a few millilitres of water to a pan with burning oil, it created a 10ft high fireball. This was daunting enough outside, but imagine how serious that could be inside. The best thing to do is turn off the heat, and if it's safe to do so, move the pan away from the hot burner.
We would also like to send a big thank you to Papa Johns, Ashford, who supplied hundreds of free pizzas to our students free of charge! This brilliant gesture was just another reason why our Freshers Fayre 2021 was one to remember.
