Ashford Station Adoption Scheme - Charing

Ashford Station Adoption Scheme is underway!

As part of a new scheme involving us, Southeastern and the Kent Community Rail Partnership (Kent CRP), some of our students including ESOL, went along to Charing village just outside of Ashford on the train, and helped to maintain the appearance of the station.

Tasks included moving planters along the platform and filling them with plants before watering them. Students also painted a rock sign by the station which now reads 'Charing' in bright white paint, whereas before it was grey and not visible from the station. There were also a series of window boxes that were built and filled up with lots of small and big plants of all colours. A small patch of grass at the front of the station has also been turned into a little courtyard style area, with a tree planted in the middle.

This was a really good experience for our students to go out and explore the wider community immediately outside Ashford, as well as help to volunteer and gain some work experience skills. The Charing Parish Council were also involved, and commented on how much better the station looked after the work was complete.

There was even talk of a board being put up at Charing station to mention how Ashford College was involved and to highlight the great work that our students have done. The next step of the Adoption scheme is hoped to be more central to the College with Ashford International station needing some work, but we are looking forward to this and hope to carry on this great partnership!
