Ashford College at Charlton Athletic

Ashford College played against Charlton Athletic's academy teams and other schools in the Valley Cup.

On Monday 9th May, our very own football team travelled up to Charlton Athletic to play in their Post 16 Valley Cup, a competition between the club's academy teams and other schools/colleges to see who were the best footballers. This was a one of a kind experience for our team, as it was a chance for them to play in a league football stadium, and to play against the up and coming Charlton players. Each game would be 20 minutes long, which allowed each team to play each other. Ashford were there representing the EKC Group.

Our team started off strong, and were using their brand new blue kit, representing the colour of our college. Our first match was against one of the academy teams, and after a start in which our competition looked fierce, we held off very well, and ended up drawing with them. This determination carried on over the course of the cup itself, and in the end, we scored a few goals and conceded one or two, but we came 5th overall which is a result to be proud of.

Even our Student Experience Officer got involved, taking the role of manager for the day, helping to encourage the team through every single game and discussing tactics/opportunities with them.

We hope to continue this partnership with Charlton Athletic throughout the summer and into the next academic year, as it provides our sport-oriented students with a really fantastic experience that they won't forget, and allows them the chance to develop their skills on the pitch. The Charlton Athletic Community Trust have done so much for our students, and you can find out more about them here on their website: cact.org.uk
