Karen Wilks

After leaving school in 1984 I started my career as a student nurse in St. Thomas’ Hospital London.
In 1986 I started my Beauty training in a private training provider in Tunbridge Wells gaining C.I.B.T.A.C and C.I.D.E.S.C.O qualifications. From there I gained a position as a salon trainer and product rep for a Kent base company, Finders Mineral Skin Therapy. In 1988 I gained a position in Glemby Hair and Beauty as a therapist and area manager. In 1989 I went on to have my children and worked as a self-employed mobile therapist to fit around my family.
I started my career at Thanet college in 1996 as a reception supervisor and assessor as well as an agency lecturer. I held many roles within Thanet College and then subsequently East Kent College and Broadstairs College, from lecturer and advanced practitioner to management roles. I am currently Deputy Head of Professional industries which includes, hair and beauty, catering, early years, health and social care, sport, business, and finance.
I have been a Broadstairs College, Local College Board staff governor for four years and have applied for a third term of office.
